Lovely gold false cypress. It’s one of the filifera varieties with the gorgeous semi weeping dense conical architecture.
A note ...Read Moreabout sizing: These and other cultivars are not small plants. They grow slower than the straight species but they’re not staying even 4-5 feet without a lot trimming.
I have two that are 11 years old and are both approximately 9 ft tall and 11 ft wide. They’re not done growing although they’ve slowed a touch the past year or so,
I’ve seen these poor plants butchered in our neighborhood after poor placement. It’s not our neighbors fault as these are often mismarketed as small plants. Most people don’t realize how big they can get until it’s a problem. Sadly, I’ve seen them planted far too close to buildings and then eventually mangled with bad pruning practices or removed all together.
With proper spacing and planning, they’re magnificent additions to a landscape. They’ll tolerate some shade to full sun and a variety of soils including clay as long as it’s not wet.
They provide dense screening and shelter for birds.
This is supposed to be a slower growing gold mop with more of a spreading habit. I've read conflicting information on it, some places say...Read More that it could be a large shrub (10-15') and some places say it will stay much smaller (under 5'). I got a couple of these about 4 years ago and it is too soon to say how big they are going to get but they have not grown much bigger yet. I am impressed with the color, it stays bright yellow year-round for me and might be the best looking gold variety I've seen.

Could not find this in my local area even though it is supposed to tolerate our hot, humid summers better. Finally found one in PA while...Read More visiting relatives. Planted last fall in part shade and have had lots of new growth since.
UPDATE: The shrub has continued to grow beautifully, BUT... this fall marks the 6-year point since planting and it has already reached - and according to some sites, exceeded - the expected "mature" width and height. Current size is approx. 5x6 and it is overflowing the intended space. I refuse to forever prune the thing and although reluctant to transplant such a nice specimen, it may be the prudent thing to do. There is now more info available re: this shrub (than when I first researched it 6 yrs ago), but with the exception of one site, it has already outgrown many of the listed sizes. And if that one site is correct, that it can reach 10-20' high and 8-10' wide, I def have a problem!
