The name phlox means 'flame', an appropriate epithet for these brightly colored, showy flowers popular in bedding and border displays.
Cultivation: The tall perennial phloxes are easily grown in any temperate climate, though they need a lot of water while they are growing. The annual species will grow in almost any climate from the tropics to the coldest regions. Grow in fertile soil that drains well but remains moist, in a sunny or part-shaded position. Propagate form seed or cuttings or by division. Watch out for red spider mite, eelworm and powdery mildew.

This tall perennial can grow to more than 3' in height. In summer, it bears long-lasting, terminal flowerheads comprising many small 5-lobed flowers. Colors range through violet, red, salmon and white according to variety.
