Ixora - Jungle Flame
From tropical regions of Africa, Asia and islands of the Pacific, this a large genus of about 400 species of ...Read Moreevergreen shrubs and small trees, some with spectacular heads of scarlet, orange, yellow, pink or white flowers. They have glossy, deep green leaves. In Asia, the roots of ixoras are used to make a medicine said to alleviate stomach ailments and cure dysentery. These shrubs are used for massed bedding, hedges and screens, and can be grown in containers.
Cultivation: Ixoras need a warm, frost-free climate to grow outdoors as they are frost tender; in the tropics, they appreciate a part-shaded position, and in cooler climates they are grown in greenhouses. Humus-rich, moist but freely drained, friable soils and high humidity suit them best, and they need regular water during the warmer months. Light pruning after flowering in fall or late winter will maintain shape; spent flowerheads should also be removed. Propagate from cuttings in summer or from seed in spring.
Ixora coccinea - Jungle Geranium
From tropical Southeast Asia, this neat, rounded evergreen shrub reaches a height of 3' with a spread of 5'. Small, scarlet, tubular flowers borne through summer in dense, ball-like clusters among the 4" long, dark green leaves may be followed by cherry-sized black fruit.
Zones 11-12

Evergreen perennial to 40º, annual in colder regions. This is absolutely one of my favorites because of the flower cluster and its vibrant color.
