Bougainvillea grow very well here, into monster house eaters, climbing 40’ into trees, even or especially, when completely neglected.
Vera Deep Purple is refreshingly well behaved. It grows about 6-8’ for me and is filled with big bunches of colorful bracts.
It’s taller than it’s suppose to, but like I said, everything grows huge here.
The color seems to last longer without fading in the full sun here than other varieties do.
I have it on an arch. The other bougainvillea on that arch is big, it fills in the top but has bare legs. Vera Deep purple, filled in the arch from the ground up the side. They look picture perfect together.

It's not much of a dwarf, though but neither does it throw up huge shoots that climbs into trees.
It does have thorns however and they're sharp. Unlike some with straight needle like thorns these are short slightly recurved sturdy thorns bit like those on roses. They don't so much as grab you but if you grab a branch you can get pricked badly and if you pull on a branch by mistake lacerated too.
As it flowers on new wood and only at the end of branches in big trusses it needs cutting back hard and feeding at the right time of year (for me early winter) to encourage those new strong flowering stems or you get quite a weak show of flowers. Not no flowers but not those large very dense hanging plumed trusses its so unique in producing. It seems to grow and flower all in winter, so winter is the time to water as well. Very different to my other bougainvilleas that flower right at the end of winter after a long dry rest. As it produces stems and flowers in a fountain shape it needs the space to do just that. Very nice over a wall or in a large pot as a centre piece. One of my favourites. Now I need vera white and and and. Vera deep purple would look gorgeous with the white.
