I've had this plant for over 25 years (Zone 9A) and have neglected it most of that time. I finally broke up a long neglected clump, and h...Read Moreave multiples which I grow in different parts of my yard in different conditions, all have thrived. Some have differing forms according to the manner I planted and placement. One is in a pot with more media in a mostly shaded spot on the edge of my patio and it produced a bounty of new narrower, much longer-leaved offsets. I also poked a couple in the pockets of strawberry pot on my covered patio that contained larger B. nutans in the main, and those have done well as long as they get enough light and water, which the ones on the darker neglected side don't and so those have waned some when I forget to rotate it. That planting seems to require more attention, and water, because there isn't much media and or the competition with the larger brom. Another leftover piece I threw into a very shallow hanging bird-bath dish in the shade, along with some billbergia pieces-- sometimes it dries out, but other times sits in water, and together they've performed merrily there. Another is sitting off on a bench, gets more filtered and some direct sun, predictably is more compact. I water, I don't water-- I hardly think about them. I rarely fertilize. They thrive. It's a tough, beautiful little plant and when the sweet little glowing magenta flower appears I'm always delighted.

Saying that I do think partial shade is best in summer.
