This is one of the more common of the Autumn...Read More flowering species of the southern African winter-rainfall zone.
It's natural habitat is the Western Cape Province. They occur in stony sandstone, gritty granite loam and light to heavy clay.
Flowering occurs after summer, generally when the nights are cool, but is not dependant on rain to begin growth.
The flower stalk is produced before the leaves. There are generally two or three leaves, sometimes one. The leaves of the flowering stem are bladeless, the later leaf which is bladed and sword shaped, or linear, grows during the winter wet season, and is necessary for the development of the new corm.
