The ethylene gas given off by the decomposing fruit will force the pineapple to fruit about 6 mos early. I think this one has no spines, so its easy to weed.
I use a water soluble fertilizer once a month for best results.

There was some leaf damage but they recovered as soon as the temperatures got above 80 degrees on a regular basis. Ours are about 1 year old or more and still have not produced fruit. They love high heat and humidity and lots of water, especially by mist.
