In Zones 9 and 10, the plant has a shrubby or tree-like growth habit with woody stems. In colder zones after a hard freeze, Hibiscus mutabilis, cultivar 'Single Flower' will die back to the ground, emerge in the spring and grow rapidly. Plants grown in the northern end of their hardiness range, should be mulched during overwintering. It can withstand light frosts. Sometimes, it is slow to resprout and will not do so until temperatures are fairly warm. Remember that it is a late bloomer.
