I have not grown this plant. It is an endangered species and can only be found in small populations in these Texas counties: Coke, Mitch...Read Moreell and Runnels. Texas Poppymallow produces leaves from August to early September forming a basal rosette then bolts in early April setting bloom buds shortly afterwards. The flowering period depends upon the amount and times of precipitation and temperature. The obovate petals are red to purple with a deeper red basal spot and the stigmas red or pink. No new blooms are formed by late June. Fruiting and fruit dispersal occurs in early May to mid-July. By late July, all of the above the soil structures are gone. The 7.8 to 11.9 mm in diameter fruit are composed of 12 to 20 mericarps. The seeds are black and are usually dispersed in a area close to the mother plant. Seed collection and propagation of this plant is prohibited. The plant is protected by federal law.
The Texas poppy-mallow can be distinguished from the common winecup because the stem diameter is about the size of a pencil and are stiffly erect. In addition, the leaf lobes of Texas poppy-mallow are broad and irregularly-shaped.
