My gardening club had excellent success transplanting wild plants, though they require constant attention after transplanting in terms of water before they get established. It's a good idea to cut back leaves/stems, especially for older plants. Often times with the plants they will look like they are dead, but they aren't... a plant which we had transplanted in fall did not fully return until the spring. As long as you keep watering it, it will grow back.

A skilled friend of mine has propagated Zizotes milkweed through root cuttings. Not sure of the exact details, but he cut them so that each piece had a node, and planted them in soil with the top exposed to light, using plant food as well.

I received a root cutting of the plant from him this year, and after moving it to my garden it fared quite well until a monarch cat appeared, which combined with the sun and the transplant shock caused the top stem to wither. Within a week though, new growth reappeared. It would've grown if a trigger-happy squirrel hadn't dug up the spot. I am still watering and hoping it may return.

added: This Milkweed surprisingly transplants well! I transplanted one after it was mowed by accident and it is growing fast! All I did was give it plant food!

added: Also this plant grows in Zone 10. I am in zone 10 and Zizotes Milkweed grows wild here. It is a native.
