I have seen it grow in sun and also mostly sun - super hot and dry most of the days but it prefers a bit of shade and a bit of water. Brings the swallowtails. Plant some A fimbriata nearby if you want to feed all the caterpillars.

Hardly seemed like ...Read Moreenough food to sustain and grow the caterpiller but perhaps it was. Very quickly the plant regrew back to a very healthy state and commenced flowering. This is a "new" plant for us and we find it fascinating. I have heard it has a long root.

It's a host plant for Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillars, but even with just one caterpillar, it seem like the caterpillar needs much more foliage than one plant could provide. I've also seen the plant in the wild on grassy roadsides and an area near a dry creek which probably gets runoff or even flood waters on occasion. I've heard they get a thick, long root, so it would probably be hard to dig one up in the wild.
