I called Schreiner's and was told it has to have yellow beards. Does anyone else have this iris and it has purple beards?? I notice the majority of the pictures on AIS wiki and google search have lavender beards. Any comments would be appreciated! I received this iris as a bonus with other iris I ordered from the 2006 Schreiner's Iris Lover's Catalog. I didn't pay much attention to it at first as I had so many iris in my garden. Last year, I noticed one iris that seemed to glisten in my iris bed. It had lost its tag, and I'd never really noticed it before. Searching near the rhizome, I uncovered its tag and discovered it was a bonus iris named 'Sugar Coated'. It seemed to bloom over a long period of time and every time I went out to look at my iris, it caught my eye. I fell in love with it and was very careful to transplant it when I divided my iris last fall. It began blooming in the middle of May this year. Its blooms last quite a while. I'm fascinated by its very pale pinkish tinge and the fact it is almost irridescent. . I looked up other pictures of this iris on the web, and I noticed most had a lavender or purple beard while Schreiner's show a yellow beard. It has grown very well for me in my zone 5 garden's sandy soil. It is one of my favorites, and I grow only Wister or Dykes medalists for the most part, so it has stiff competition.

While many of my Iris's have either a velvet look or an iridescent look this one actually looks as though sugar or glitter has been dropped on it. All lived and most are in the soil, but some are still living in pots -- not dead.
The next year I bought 100 more rhizomes from a variety of places, none died.
I would be very wary of purchasing this iris.
I also saw it at the AIS Convention 2007. It looked puny there and had no blooms. One onlooker said she had never seen that variety bloom.
