We did grow basil and marigolds in between the plants and they were all well fertilized with manure and then mulched with either decomposing wood chips, fall-bagged leaves or grass cuttings when we set them out in cages. Mulching helped a lot with disease, we think, with water conservation and with weeding. We grow several varieties of tomato every year, but we always try to make sure we have at least half a dozen Virginia Sweets plants.

It produced a healthy crop (25-30 per plant) of medium to large tomatoes with vibrant color, and excellent flavor and texture. The largest that year was 1.7 pounds. Most fruit were between 12 to 16 ounces. It set decently in the heat too, but it wasn't a brutally hot summer. Overall, this proved to be a winner for my So-Cal garden.

Good - for a bicolor. Slightly better tasting than Burrackers Favorite, IMO.
