This is an incredibly beautiful cactus, and it can be found at the two main big-b...Read Moreox stores in the U.S. Make sure to get this golden-spined (more like golden-furred) subspecies rather than the more drab white-spined species itself. Mine died this summer, apparently from too much water. It was kept outdoors under a porch to prevent rain from watering it, but I guess I hose-watered it too much. Due to the coverage by spines/ "fur" it's almost impossible to even tell if this cactus is alive or dead, happy or struggling. So you really have to be an expert cactus enthusiast to keep it successfully.
On the other hand, my white-spined P. haselbergii is doing great indoors in a clay pot at a hot, west-facing window.
(Note: I don't believe the current pic on DG is correct. Mine was an intensely yellowish golden color.)
