It grows in the most god-forsaken areas of scab-rock and bunch-grass. This year, though, I was pleasanly surprised when I found one growing in the field next to my house, which has been disturbed soil as it gets "mowed" every year or so to keep the brush down. I was going to try to collect some seed, but it got mowed before I had the chance:( Maybe next year. Arrow-leaf and a slick leaf balsam-root along with purple lupins and a tiny yellow fritillary (forget the name) grow in this same place. It was quite a site this year as we had a decent amount of moisture last winter. Oh - I saw a yellow calochortus several years ago in the mountains west of us. First and only one I've ever seen.
