'Shaggy' is sometimes sold as Astrantia major 'Margery Fish' . (Margery Fish - 1888-1969 - was one of the most important influences on English Cottage Gardening ...one of the most admired gardeners and garden writers of her day, after Vita Sackville-West).
Astrantias are very promiscuous and self-seed readily. If you are happy just to have slightly different flowers, leave the last of the flower heads to set seeds, and be patient. It can take an astrantia up to three or even four years from seed sowing to first flowering, and then you will probably find a few more changes each year for the next few years until the plant reaches full maturity. The end result will probably be quite different from the parent plant. It is these self-sown seedlings that are often sold as 'Shaggy'.
And..ohh..slugs hate Astrantia. The astrantias can act as a natural defence. Very usefull if you grow it together with Hosta.
