Okay, it has now bloomed. It had a label like a patient's bracelet, but later the seller confessed she wasn't sure what it would look like. Whatever it is, it's gorgeous.

I purchased a Japanese Tree Peony 'Kinshi ' from Springhill in early spring 04. It was tiny and I wondered if it would make it that firs...Read Moret year. Lo and behold the second year it has grown to about 2-1/2' tall and has two blossoms. The largest and first to blossom is shown in the picture.

Each site I have looked at shows this as a double, bright or golden yellow blossom about 6" across. But mine is lemon yellow infused with dark magenta, almost burgundy highlights. Perhaps because this is the first year it has bloomed it is not blooming true, but it's glorious all the same. It also has a delicious lemon scent.

The Chinese refer to the tree peony as the 'Moutan' This has been variously translated but probably means 'The Emperor Flower'. While the tree peony originated in China, it had found its way to Japan by the 8th Century AD.
