If starting in fall, you can start seeds inside 2 to 3 weeks before the last frost free date, protecting them from hard frosts. Seeds will germinate better if they are planted in late summer and shaded to keep the soil cool and thus reduce evaporation.

To harvest lettuce, you can take the whole plant or snap off the outer leaves.
