I was disappointed that the permaculture approach would not work, but as a cippolini they performed quite well here in intermediate-onion country (Coastal CA, 37'N). They were decent as 'spring' onions, and I guess they are popular for that because they form small bulbs (as in the top photo) when the stems are still scallion-sized.
