There's a specimen at the Arnold Arboretum (Boston, Z6a) that's been there at least 30 years. It was killed to the ground by an exceptional winter about 15 years ago, but has regrown beautifully and is now about 15' tall. It's growing in woodland conditions, in deciduous shade, flanked (and sheltered) by a pair of small hemlocks also about 15' tall.
In the south, this can get 30' tall.
The flowers are not very showy and look a lot like chestnut flowers, which is not surprising as the two are related.
