Plants will emerge with golden male flowers first, then female flowers (these appear with a football-shaped node below the blossom which will ultimately become a squash if circumstances are favorable).
Plants will emit vines and may need some guidance toward clear spots of the garden. Vines have bristles similar to tomatoes but a bit stiffer. As the vines creep along, tendrils off them will eagerly loop around adjacent plants, may need to keep these in check lest they weigh their neighbors down.
