Another point is that this plant was discovered in the New Zealand wild in 1890 and therefore is not a cultivar. There are also reports that it (purpurea) is native to NSW and Victoria however no amount of searching can find if it has actually been seen in the wild. A mystery still continues.

The flowers are unusual & hop-like, but not colourful. The foliage is eye-catching & provides colour year round. I really like Dodonaeas because I like rugged looking plants. They may not suit a typical cottage garden though.
