However, mine have tolerated the application of manure. I have 4 varieties of leucadendron - all seem to relish weekly deep irrigation during our hot dry summer. providing they do not sit in water for extended periods, they are fine with irrigation. they handle drought beautifully though.
Some have said they are short lived but there are specimens in my neighborhood that are 15 ft tall trees with 6-8 inch dia. trunks.
Prune in late winter / early spring - before new growth, prune hard to encourage bushiness. aim for a vase shape - to ensure good air flow to the center of the plant

I have not grown this plant; however, I have observed it growing in Maui, Hawaii. 'Safari Sunset' (Leucadendron hybrid - L. salignum x L. laureolum) was hybridized by J. Stevens/I Bell in 1962 in New Zealand. It blooms from fall to spring. It was introduced in 1964 and was the first internationally successful protea cultivar. Sometimes the name `Rainbow' is used when the color of the blooms change after winter.

It started getting all yellow and dried in the end of the summer. When we took it from the garden we noticed that the roots had rotten. Can anyone tell me why it happend? I'm already trying to make new plants of the bordeaux one, but we have a yellow one and we don't want it to die. Thanks. Elsa.
