In an impressive e...Read Morevolutionary development to avoid being eaten by giant Galapagos tortoises, this species starts out life looking like a typical seedling Opuntia. Soon the pads elongate and become columnar eventually forming a very tall thick trunk topped by branching cactus pads as if an Opuntia mated with a palm tree! As an added protection, the pads are very spiny and the trunk is guarded by a skirt of very long sharp spines that make it impenetrable to tortoises. Very rare in collections, a must have for Consolea enthusiasts!

The 'macrocarpa' variety grows in forest & shrub areas at a higher elevation than the other 3 types which all grow near sea level.
They all grow on the Galapagos Islands.
