Same as Bishop's Crown but with less heat. The 3 flaps of the fruits have no heat at all and can be extracted and eaten fresh. Center part of fruit is hot, be careful. Plant produces good yields of 2" long by 2" wide bell shaped hot peppers. Peppers have a mild spicy flavor and turn from light green to red when mature. Plant has green stems, green leaves, and white flowers with greenish-yellow markings. United States Department of Agriculture, PI 273420. A variety from South America. This plant is often grown solely for its fruits which are actually often mistaken for flowers. Also a great ornamental. 80-100 days. I HIGHLY RECOMMED THIS PEPPER!!

This very unusual pod shaped variety is believed to have been transferred from South America to Europe by the Portuguese in the 18th century and is actually part of the species Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum. The plants are quite large growing 3 to 4 ft tall and produce 30 to 50 pods. The flesh of each pod is thin although crisp to taste. The body of the pods have some detectable heat, but the wings are sweet and mild. PI 441551 refers to Chapeu de Frade a close cousin.

The plants themselves have a really strong odor, very hot and pepper-y. No word on the peppers though, will have to wait a little while longer for them to come about.
All in all I'm impressed with the spunk of this plant. It even survived two days in near freezing temperatures when we first moved it to the new house. (Someone thought the emergency shut off to the boiler was a light switch.)
