It is not at all tolerant of cold, dropping it's leaves at the first cold front of last fall. It did survive the Winter though and is sprouting new leaves as we speak from the base. It has vicious spines along the stems so be careful when pruning, etc. The nursery owner where I bought it said it is a distant relative of roses, but as for the accuracy of this information I can not attest.
