In late November 2019 I looked all over the Appalachian Collection on the East Side of Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois and after seei...Read Moreng about 20 or more conifers labelled as the Eastern Hemlock, I finally found a specimen tree labelled as the Carolina Hemlock. It is, of course, a very similar species, but its flat needles are not tapered, are about 0.8 inches long, and has cones about 1 to 1.5 inches long where the cone scales are displayed widely open. The Carolina species tends to be smaller, usually to about 50 feet high with a trunk diameter to around 2 feet. It is native to a small range in the central Appalachian Mountains of western North & South Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
