I am not sure how it performs in a regular garden bed, but it can tolerate flooding, wet winters, and it will flower even with only morning light. It is not invasive by seed, and it forms a tidy upright clump, only 6" at the base, about 5 feet tall. I have never staked it, although I have had individual out stems fall over at the base in high wind.
