It does shed swaths of bark, which the cats like to scratch, but blooms and blooms from May through the summer, attracting insects of all sorts, hummingbirds, bushtits, hawkmoths, bees...I bought it on sale in a 5 gallon pot about 20 years ago.
I love its "vase" shape, sweet scent and the arching branches. It can take dry, windy, alkaline soil, cold springs, minimal attention.

Mine is 3 yea...Read Morers old and quickly grew to 5 X 5 or more, is arching and has been in gorgeous bloom for 6 weeks with no fading blooms yet! When the blooms are gone there's plenty of other flowers and bushes to feast the eye on. It's planted in fast draining soil with only early morning sun and dappled late afternoon sun. I'm in NW Washington in Z6.

It is a large shrub, but it doesn't take up a lot of space because it has an upright growth habit. It does not need to be pruned until you want to limit its size. But why would you? It blooms from top to bottom. Each year it produces more blooms than the year before, and the blooms seem to last longer each year.
