Hippeastrum, Amaryllis 'Royal Velvet'

Central Phoenix -- We grow several varieties of Hippeastrum/amaryllis in our garden, including Royal Velvet. These plants are amazingly ...Read Morehardy and survive on summer water every other week. One plant that was on the outer margins of the irrigation pool, died this year, I believe from being too dry. Ours grow in partial shade, with the bulbs in almost complete shade. We have not fertilized these plants in several years and last year only a few bloomed. We are hoping that with fertilization we will get good bloom this year.

It consistently gives multi-scape performances and has developed so ...Read Morethat both offsets also bud. The scapes seem to be internally limited to just four blossoms each, as compared to Minerva or Goliath which often give six when the bulb has been well developed.

Beautiful flower. This is my favorite because of its intense, dark red color.
