I bought the fruit at the Atlanta Farmer's Market for one dollar (three times more expensive then the smooth type). I put the fruit in the greenhouse on a bench and waited one month for it to sprout. In one month the sprout was 10 inches tall. The vine has been in the ground now for three months and is in heavy bloom, but only males so far. The smooth one produced male flowers for a few weeks before the females formed.
The seller said it was more expensive because it was more tasty. I just hope that it is tasty. The regular smooth one has very little taste, but it will take up the flavors arould it when cooked.
