On a small residential property, this is better kept small (shrub sized) by annual stooling and pollarding. Makes a great foliage accent in the mixed border. Grows very rapidly. Heavy pruning also makes it grow larger leaves, and eliminates the flowers and seed pods. Once it has a well-developed root system, which takes a couple of years to develop, the leaves can take full sun here without scorching. Best performance is in full sun.
Very late to leaf out. Flowers in late June on the previous season's growth. Blooms after the leaves are fully expanded, but the flowers can make a great show anyway.
