The fragrance reminds me of rotting apples. It's most strongly released by crushing/scraping the twigs and leaves.
The hybrids with C. chinensis ('Venus', 'Aphrodite', 'Hartlage Wine') are much showier, with much larger flowers. Unfortunately, they are not fragrant.
