Foliage is Winter-growing, Summer-deciduous. Large scape (2-3') arises from bare bulb in late Summer/early Fall. The bulb should be planted so that the top half is exposed. A good loam or sandy soil is best. A slow grower - 10-14 years from seed! For a similar but 'faster' growing plant, try B.littoralis ... only 5-6 years to bloom from seed!

A leafless stem rises in autumn to carry a round head of numerous 3" long funnel-shaped flowers in bright red. The leaves appear after flowering.
