They seem to be closely related to each other but look very different, On...Read Moree with white spines and deep red/brown flowers (M. leona).
And the one pictured in the book "The Cactus Family" (Anderson 2001) and in the PlantFiles have darker spines and Purple/Violet and white flowers which are larger and open wider (M. pottsii).
