Sounds lake also what I have going. Its for sure hardier than D.lutescens as it took our winter in the SF bay area just fine with one ultimate low of 33f and a handful of other mid to high 30's this winter.
Fast growing is true. Loves fertilizer- its a relative speed demon when fed.
If this space is blank in a few years...it was some other palm-ha.

It is native to Pemba Island, just off the coast of Tanzania, and not too distant from the Comoros Islands, where D. lanceolata and cabadae are found. This palm comes in clumping and non-clumping specimens, and the clumping seems random but is much more common than the solitary version. Cold tolerance is supposedly high and apparently similar to D. lutescens. Its broad, thicker leaves are very reminiscent of D. lanceolata. Like many Dypsis, there is variability within the species.

Has pole-like deep green...Read More ringed trunk and relatively short, upright leaves with a strong arch near their tips. Mature palms develop a pronounced 'foot' (swelling at base of trunk). It is a prolific grower (fast) but a bit marginal in most areas of southern California (has been grown successfully and well by some in so Cal, but only in the best climates). It is sometimes confused with Dypsis lanceolata, which has a similar appearance, but is a smaller and a bit hardier palm. Some solitary forms of this species are available in cultivation.
