Fringed Poppy Mallow (Callirhoe digitata) is a native plant that can be found in Arkansas, Il...Read Morelinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Oklahoma. It typically occurs in rocky, dryish, soils in limestone glades, meadows and prairies. It usually grows 2 feet to 3 feet tall (sometimes up to 4 feet). The erect stems are slender and branching. Lower leaves are much larger than the upper leaves. They are palmately divided into 5 to 7 finger-like lobes. Its bloom period runs from mid-spring to September. Cup-shaped, five-petaled, solitary, upward facing magenta flowers are up to 2" wide and are on pedicels that are up to 6" long. The corolla is deeplyobed. The flower petal edges are fringed. Typical of mallow family members, the stamen and style form a very prominent central column. hence the species name. It can be distinguished from the closely related native purple poppy mallow, winecup (Callirhoe involucrata) by its upright habit. Callirhoe involucrata is procumbent and mat-forming which tends to trail close to the ground. Its long tap root assists the plant in its drought survival; however, it makes transplanting of established plants difficult.
There is a (Callirhoe pedata) palmleaf poppymallow, pimple mallow that has the synonym Callirhoe digitata var. stipulata which is a native Texas plant which should not be confused with (Callirhoe digitata).
