Spotting the bush in early summer - I thought it was a regular (green) wild gooseberry bush but this year I noticed that the berries were totally wrong. The berries were black and harry.
I too am surprised that I had the black gooseberry bush all this time and didn't notice the mature berries were totally wrong (as the birds in our area are ravinous.
It was extremely incredible to watch the families of birds devouring a feast wild saskatoons on a tree in the backyard. The tree was thickly covered with berries this year but all the berries disappeared in short order once they were ripe. The birds swooped in and had a quick short feast.
Likely the birds devoured the black gooseberries once they ripened.
