I have both the Brunfelsia jamaicensis and a Brunfelsia americana. Comparing the two:
1. they appear to grow about the same size...Read Morer />
2. jamaicensis in the evening has a fresh citrus like fragrance very similar to a common white fragipani tree, and Magnolia grandiflora. americana has the same fragrance but with a spicy overlay.
3. Jamaicensis seems to have flushes of flowers, where as the americana flowers one by one.
4. Jamaicensis has whiter and larger flowers, but flowers later (from late summer) - americana flowers sporadically from spring onwards.
5. Jacamensis' flowers stay white until the drop to the ground, whereas Americana's fade from light cream to through to light brown before they drop.
5. Both will grow, but won't flower without receiving at least 4 hours of direct sun, and their flowers are more fragrant if you water them in the afternoon.
Another balcony sized plant that is highly fragrant in the evening is Clerodendrum chinensis var. chinensis, that has a wafting sweet fragrance that reminds me of a candy shop. My other favourite being oncidium 'sharry baby' with its wafting hot chocolate fragrance.
