Since C. schiedei grows in a clump and does not get much hight too fast it's right there where the deer can easily eat it. It does grow fast though, loves the cool wet weather we get up here.

2008: I have found that growth can increased tremendously by using regular doses of fertilizer. This fern gets more beautiful every year including up close as the trunk becomes covered in golden red hairs.It also barely qualifies as a tree fern as the trunk tends to send out many suckers. Also, one of the best tree ferns to keep potted forever, you will ever find. A very atypical tree fern.

However, just kept moist it does great and looks great. Good fern for So Cal.
