Ruttya, Hummingbird Plant, Rabbit Ears 'Orange'

I purchased a small plant early in 2015, and it chugged along in its pot because I could not decide where to plant it. At some point my ...Read Moredog pulled the ID tag out of the pot, so after a few months I couldn't remember what it was so it remained in the pot for about 18 months.

It has been an extremely dry summer and fall in my neighborhood, but this trooper chose today to burst into full bloom. Very exotic looking and hummingbirds and bees have been swooping down to it.

Hummingbirds have found it and regularly feed on its interesting flowers. It seems to like so Cal/OC growing conditions. It is now over 8 ft off the ground in spots draped over and amongst its support plants.

I am wondering now if it is more of a perennial, lasting several seasons, but not a long life shrub. It's been worth it though. I will have to take cuttings or start seeds to make sure I still have one. I bought it for hummingbirds and butterflies, but it didn't seem to have any special attraction. I like it because it's different.

This fall I built a greenhouse and moved this plant into it. WOW. It bloomed and has been blooming for three months. I had no idea. I will keep it in a pot and put outside this spring and hope it re-blooms so that my hummers and bees can enjoy.
