It is not at flowering time that it is so colourful however. The flowers when they open are small and white. The white colour comes from the conspicuous sepals, while the petals are very small and shaped like antlers. After flowering, as the seed capsules develop, the sepals enlarge considerably and change through pink to red giving the tree its spectacular appearance. It does well in cultivation and I have a small tree established in my garden. It has flowered the last three years, but only once have the fruit developed and that year it was a picture, although here in Victoria, it was well after Christmas before it was seen in all its glory!
