It was blooming the second year and rapidly increased in size and bloom each year. I've had it about 7 years and have had to cut it back 3 times, with a hard prune this last fall (resulting in no blooms this year). The size was overtaking everything else. It gets all morning and early afternoon sun, then bright shade on one side and heavy shade on the other. The shade doesn't affect it's shape or bloom. We live very close to the mountains and in the winter our northern sun swings more to the east, doesn't get over the mountain until after 9:00AM, and barely hits the bush until spring. When our temps dip to 5 degrees this area stays shady all day and doesn't thaw for most of the winter. Our much longer spring and summer days (from 4:30 AM to 9:00PM sun) and hot temps (a month + of 90's or more) seem to set the bloom for the next year. Rumor has it that the sun will scorch the beautiful bright yellow/green foliage on this bush so I can't put it in a sunny spot where I can enjoy the intoxicating flower scent. The trick is to let it get enough sun to set bloom yet protect it from the burning glare of those long hot summer days. In its part shade position it gets a LOT of winter moisture that drains quickly but doesn't dry out. Another golden MO receives the water draining down from the pond (with all the same growing conditions) and it isn't nearly as robust or happy. I have wild mockorange growing in a dry mostly bright shaded woodland area and they do much better than the one with wetter feet. My soil is sandy loam with a nutritious mulch. All of the plants in my vast gardens get watered every 3 days no matter what.
