It doesnt like damp soil, which kills it during the winter, and it also doesnt like well drained sun positions which make it go brown, shortening its life.

This plant needs and comes from woodland edge conditions that's not too wet or too dry. I have found in other conditions its not that adaptable and is short lived, only lasting one or two years and it really does need the elusive moist well drained conditions to get it to survive long-term.
For me It self seeds quite unexpectedly in to cracks, edges and other well drained spots, often some distance from the plant, but as im in a coastal location the windy, dry conditions just dont suit it.
