Kalanchoe Species, Kalanchoe Stonecrop, Lavender Scallops

I love this little plant!

I lived in Denver, CO (zone 4-5) where I purchased the plant at the Denver Botanic Garden sale ...Read Moreand then moved to northern California (zone 9). It's planted in a container, and I keep it inside, in a sunny window (3+ hours of sun/day). However, this winter I had it outside where it received 1/2 day sun. I realize now, since I re-potted it and brought it back inside and it's leaves are beautiful green, that zone 9 was probably a little bit cold for the winter. Thankfully it's all well again!

However, the stems keep getting taller and taller with the leaves all at the top. It has always behaved this way. And it will start growing "roots" above the soil and they reach downward. About once a year I will snip the plant and re-plant the tops in the soil, and then the stretching begins all over again!

Is there anything I should do or is this how the plant normally grows?

It is under citrus in deep shade and receives bi-weekly irrigation. It has frozen on the top in the worst freezes (like Jan/Dec. 2013, 24F) but the body of the plant has been unaffected.
Like many succulents, avoid putting trimmings from this into your compost pile. Unless the pile is really hot, the cuttings will root and grow.
