I have divided this lily several times and last year, when I neglected to divide it - a tuber grew out of the pot and naturalized itself in the silt on the bottom of my pond (2.5' deep) where it lives very happily and continues to bloom. This is a mid size waterlily and the 6"-8" pads cover about 3' of water. Pads are a dark green and contrast nicely with the flowers.
If you can find this waterlily, you'll absolutely love it!
I have a man-made "natural" pond meaning that although we did put a rubber liner on the bottom, the clay soil naturally holds water from the pond and springs continue to keep fresh water flowing into it. We did add a drain at one end to allow for excess flow out. We have a natural "seep" of soil that comes into the pond each year through the rocks surrounding it, giving it a silty bottom which requires "mucking out" each summer. Plants naturally root in it. I've found that several of my waterlilies have now "naturalized."
