Three years ago, we planted two red abutilons in full shade under an overhang on ...Read Morethe north side of the house, and two in full sun out in the open. Both were in well-watered, heavy clay. Now the plants in the shade are about six feet tall and seem to be constantly in bloom -- they look great!. The plants in the sun are only about half as tall, and don't look so good. I don't think the problem is too much sun because our summers never get very hot. Rather, the plants in the sun are exposed to a lot more WIND, which is the real bane of abutilons. The leaves on these shrubs are very delicate, and even a stiff breeze can tatter them. Hot, dry winds can also cause wilting and yellowing of the leaves.
I've found that abution makes a very attractive and long lasting cut flower, especially if you remove some of the leaves around the blossoms.
