I planted this untreated organic corn 7 Jun 2004. This area of MN had the 2nd wettest, and the 5th coldest, June on record, with 4 nights...Read More of 34 F and two freezes. The Bear Island has 98% germination, rapid growth, (knee high by the 4th!) and deep, extensive root systems resulting in spinach green foliage. 3 other varieties of corn- 2 modern OP sweet corns and a modern OP flour corn, all untreated organic seed- had germinations of 15%, 20% and 72% respectively. All three varieties showed N and boron deficiencies, in a high N soil, due to poor root development.
The 1926 ad for Bear Island said it was "valuable for cool damp conditions" and that is still true. I'm looking forward to seeing this corn's production later this summer.
