Leaves are 7-1/2" long by 3-1/8" wide, dark green with a shiny top and underside. The blade is narrowly ovate to elliptic in shape with a slightly wavy margin and no corrugation. There are intense red-purple dots on petioles and average substance with 6-7 vein pairs.

Many flower scapes with purple red dots appear in August, with dark purple buds that remain closed until they drop; scapes run 30"-44" tall. There can be as many as 52 buds per scape; no seed pods. At the peak of bloom in August, a mature planting of Hosta clausa can be quite striking.

In spring, new shoots typically stretch 6-12" from the previous year's growth as the plant continues to spread.
