It's growing up and over an 8ft wooden fence, and blooming on both sides. As long as you wear garden gloves, you can trim and train it where to go. I'd like to propagate another plant to extend its protective spiny presence along our garden wall. I tried cuttings in a vase of water, but they died. Does anyone have success propagating it? And is it the kind that would work better with rooting hormone and directly into a pot? I'm experimenting with greener vs older cuttings. Thanks.

Blooms only on new wood.
This thorny, scandent shrub/vine will sprawl without support and regular training. Very fast growing, it can get 10-15' tall in a single season, and as wide as tall, even when grown in a large pot in Rhode Island. I find the small clinging recurved spines more annoying than lethal, but they make it challenging to untangle cut stems in pruning and training. Heavy gloves are essential.
Prefers moist rich soil, and luxuriates in hot weather. Tolerates drought, but may drop its leaves. Late to emerge from dormancy in spring. Can bloom year-round in subtropical climates.
This isn't a Snowbird plant. Here in Jalisco, it loses its leaves in winter, and flowering reluctantly tapers off through December. I'm not sure if that's due to chill or drought. Minimum winter night temperatures here can reach the low 40s F.
Performs well here with dry winters (2" rain over 8 months) and wet summers (30" in 4 months).
This species is not known to fruit or set seed anywhere in cultivation. Leaves are highly variable in shape. Some plants lack spines.
Native to southern Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatamala, and northern South America.
